Election Set for Sunday, Feb. 15
As mentioned earlier, our election was tabled for 2 weeks, at the Jan.
31 meeting. This, inadvertently, fell on Valentine's Day. To avoid a
conflict in people's plans for that day, we've scheduled the election
meeting for Sunday, Feb. 15, at 2:00 PM, at the M Dock pavilion. Please
check back, close to
that date, in case we've had to make a weather-related change in the
location.

Election Tabled for 2 Weeks
At the election meeting, on Saturday evening, Jan. 31, there were not
enough nominees, yet, to hold the election. However, there were enough
people expressing interest in serving, that it seemed prudent to give
ourselves more time to sort things out. The attendees voted to table the
election for 2 weeks. Obviously, there were too many men doing the
thinking. Two weeks will be 6:00 PM, on February 14... Valentines
Day! We'll make a slight adjustment either to the day or time - and
post it. A new email announcement will also go out.
Our appreciation to everyone who took the time to attend, and special thanks to Deloris Sanders, for staying late so we could hold our unruly meeting at the marina office.

Gus and Denise Perrin Lose House in Fire
Gus and Denise Perrin lost their Rowlett home and most of their
belongings in a fire that started late Monday night, Jan. 26. Gus is our
Past Commodore, 2004, and both have served the boat club in many other
positions and areas, in past years.
Denise's 9-month-pregnant daughter, Dallas, was awakened by the smell of
smoke, and she alerted Gus and Denise. Thankfully, they - along with the
pugs - escaped unharmed. However, most of their belongings were damaged
or destroyed. Dallas had prepared a room for the baby - due in under 2
weeks - and had put all
her baby shower gifts and baby items in it. All of it was lost.
WFAA's Debbie Denmon covered
the story, Tuesday, in print and video. Denise works in media relations
for the City of Rowlett, and her co-worker was called out to the fire,
and issued
this news release, early Tuesday morning.
A donation fund, in the name of 'Gus and Denise Perrin Family', has been
set up at the American National Bank of
Texas, in Rowlett, 5320 Lakeview Parkway. Donations may be made, in
the family’s name, at any American National Bank of Texas
location.
Gus and Denise have expressed their gratitude for the help and concern
they're receiving from friends and co-workers. Please keep the Perrin
family in your thoughts and prayers.

BBC Bylaws Change
At the BBC Christmas party (and club meeting), on Dec. 6, members voted
on and passed proposed changes in the BBC Bylaws. The changes involved
eliminating the requirement that officers or board members own a
specific type of boat (sail or power).
The result is that:
The offices of Vice Commodore of Power, and Vice Commodore of Sail, are
replaced by the offices of Vice Commodore and Rear Commodore. The four
governors on the board will no longer be specified as two governors of
power, and two of sail.
These changes are in effect for the upcoming elections, in January.

Proposed BBC Bylaws Change
At the BBC Christmas party, on Dec. 6 - which is also a "club meeting" -
members will be asked to vote on a proposed change in the BBC Bylaws.
The Bayview Boat Club was founded by sail boaters, and the club events
used to feature sailing events, along with other on-the-lake and
at-the-marina events. Over time, the BBC membership has become
predominately power boaters (though we still have, and welcome, many
sail boaters). A few years ago, some former members established the
Bayview Yacht Club, which caters more to competitive sailors and their
interests. (As it was, our Saturday parties tended to conflict with the
area sailing events that they wished to attend.)
Our current bylaws still reflect the earlier composition and orientation
of the BBC. They require that we have both a vice-commodore of power and
of sail, and the four governors on the board must include two sail
boaters and two power boaters. This requirement has become an
anachronism, and is now an impediment to filling the positions on the
Club board. We may have more than enough people willing to serve, but
who own power boats. Meanwhile, we're scrambling to find enough sail
boaters, from our small minority of sailor members, willing to serve,
and fill out all the sailboat positions.
With our Club elections coming up in January, we propose to amend the
bylaws to remove the restriction on the type of boat an officer or board
member must own. Either sail or power will be fine. Also, instead of two
vice commodores - one of sail, and one of power - we would further amend
the bylaws to have one vice commodore and one rear commodore position.

John Lambert Update
Gary Yancy, a friend and co-worker of John Lambert, has written
Commodore John Miller to update us on "Little John's" progress, after
his stroke, last week. John is doing well, is undergoing therapy, and is ready for
visitors.
Here is a
link to the letter, and directions to visit John.

John "Little John" Lambert Suffered a Stroke
For those who haven't heard, last week, John Lambert was hospitalized
with a stroke. Carla Manes, a close friend of John and Cathy, reported
that he was out of ICU, Thursday night. He is experiencing paralysis on
his right side, and is unable to speak. The doctor discovered that his
left carotid artery was completely blocked, and said that a piece of the
blockage had broken loose and caused the stroke.
John is able understand and to smile. When Cathy went to shave him, he
even took the razor out of her hand, and shaved himself with his left
hand - all good signs.
The doctor says the other artery is 60-80% blocked, and John will need
surgery to clean it out, at some point.
For years, John has worked to organize and oversee the collection of
toys from Bayview and the other Ray Hubbard marinas, for the WFAA 'Santas
Helpers Toy Drive'. This year, he is one of our BBC Governor/Fleet
Captains.
Cathy has requested no general visitors, just yet. We wish John a speedy
recovery. Please remember them both in your thoughts and prayers.
Check back for updates.

Bayview Boat Burns on Lake, Owner Injured
Sunday afternoon, 8/24/08, the boat, 'Happy Medium', burned and
sank, just outside Bayview Marina.
Thankfully,
no lives were lost in the accident. Still, it is a tragedy for the
owners, and sad for many at Bayview Marina - especially on O Dock, where
the classic wooden Chris-Craft cruiser had been a fixture for many
years. The current owners - Gary Smith and his brother, Lee - bought it
a little over a year ago. Gary has put in countless hours of painstaking
hard work, and some hard-earned dollars, on its restoration, since that
time.
On board were the owners, and a father, Randy, and his 10 year old son,
who had recently moved onto O Dock, across from 'Happy Medium'.
The boat was at a point off the south end of the marina, near where
the solid breakwater jetty gives way to the floating breakwater. A
jolting explosion blew Lee clear over the stern, and flames
engulfed the aft deck. Gary suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns to his
leg, before jumping in the water. The boy was down below, the cabin exit
blocked by the fire. He opened and wriggled up out of the front hatch,
onto the forward deck, and jumped in the water with his father. Everyone
was picked up by a ski boat that sped to the scene. The smoking
Chris-Craft drifted westward, as the fire spread. By the time the fire
boat was able to reach it, it was obviously too late to save it. They
finally knocked down the flames with the water cannon, then watched the
charred wreckage sink, offshore from the marina's dry storage lot. The
fire boat crew picked up a few floating boards and brought them back to
the marina - all that remained, after the boat went down. The exact
cause of the explosion and fire is still under investigation.
Gary was rushed to Parkland Hospital, given emergency treatment, and was
released by Monday. He has since gone back to begin the longer process
of burn treatment, beginning with the excruciating procedure of
scrubbing and scraping burned and damaged tissue from the wounds. Gary
is self-employed, with a heating and air conditioning business, and so
faces loss of his income, as he undergoes further medical treatment and
procedures (and expenses), probably followed by physical rehab therapy.
Let's keep Gary and his wife in our thoughts and prayers.

Mike Wood Memorial/Tribute Party
Thursday, Aug. 21, 4:30 - 7:30 PM, at Chandlers Landing Yacht Club
Emblematic of the kind of guy that Mike Wood was, he wished
to throw one last party for his friends and family, and their friends.
Mike enjoyed talking about this idea, and he made plans and provided for it, in the
months before his passing. And so, we will remember, celebrate and honor
him at his party - his gift to us - at Chandlers Landing, on Thursday, Aug. 21,
from 4:30 to 7:30 PM.
There will be an open bar and food, and a picture display. Everyone who
knew, or knew of, Mike is invited. He wanted people to get together for
a good time, have a few rounds on him, share some stories and maybe a
toast, and mostly laugh a lot. He said he didn't want us to be sad and
mournful, and we'll do our best. But forgive us, Mike, when an occasional
tear escapes, or a story leaves us momentarily wistful. We just
weren't ready to be done yet, Mike... that's all.

Mike Wood
Mike Wood passed away on Tuesday afternoon, 8/12/08, after a year-long
struggle with cancer and related symptoms. He was 54. Mike was a former Bayview
Boat Club member and a friend of many in the club and at Bayview Marina,
where he kept a boat for many years. He was generous and quick to help
others, a funny, entertaining story-teller with a great sense of humor.
Mike was both upbeat and matter-of-fact about life and his illness. We
will miss him.
He
sold his business and moved to Galveston, in 2006. Last summer, Mike was
hospitalized, and they found that a tumor above the bile ducts was
preventing his liver from draining, and causing pancreatitis and
jaundice. He has been in and out of the hospital, this past year, but
also made trips to Costa Rica , the Bahamas, and elsewhere.
A private family service will be held at home. For all Mike's friends
and acquaintances, a memorial party and tribute is being organized, as
per Mike's instructions. It will be on Thursday, Aug. 21. The details
will be posted soon.

Linda Redmond's Mother Has Passed Away
Linda Gail Redmond's mother, Laeuna Smith, passed away Saturday (June 7), after a
long battle with cancer. She was 89 years old.
Chris and Linda Redmond are long time Bayview
Boat Club members. Chris is a Past Commodore, and has served on the
BBC Board in several other positions, as well. The Redmonds were awarded Lifetime Membership, last February,
in recognition of their years of generous service to the club and their
support of the
'Thunder for the Children' charity, benefitting Shriners Children's
Hospitals in Texas.
Since they sold their boat, the
Linda
Gail II, last year, Linda had increasingly been caring for her
mother. It has been physically tiring, but especially, emotionally
exhausting, as the cancer spread and her mother's suffering intensified.
Chris says his mother-in-law's passing was, in the end, a merciful blessing for
her and for Linda Gail.
Chris and close friend, Marianna Hamill, both report that Linda has been doing
well, initially. Marianna said it began to hit her harder, though, as she looked through
pictures, in preparation for the funeral. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.
The funeral will be on Wednesday, June 11, at 11:00am, at the First United Methodist Church in Rockwall. Details in the Laeuna Smith obituary, in the Dallas Morning News. For other information, you may contact Marianna Hamill, at 214/ 675-0169.

We Have Lost a Bayview Friend
- from Deborah Brantley
Jim “Jimbo” Davis passed away Sunday (May 18), around 5 pm. He
suffered from cancer for the last couple of years.
Jim and June have been at Bayview Marina for about 12 years. For over 4
years, we shared our lives with them, as family and neighbors on E Dock.
Some may remember Jim dressing as Santa, for the kids, at Christmas
parties. Now they are on M Dock, and I'm sure they have many friends
there, though they haven’t been able enjoy their boat for about a year,
due to Jim’s illness.
Jim
will be cremated, and the service will be a brief memorial, Thursday, at
2:00 p.m., in Lewisville.
Please let me know if you need other information. God Bless.
Love, Deb

treasure", to a sale, open to boaters and the general public. Proceeds
from the sale will augment the BBC event fund, helping pay for even more
fun and benefits to the BBC members and guests. Unsold items will be
contributed to charity.
Further details are coming, but we wanted to give everyone a "heads up".

New 'News and Announcements' Page
And the first news is... this page. During the 2007 Season, the
Commodore's Log
wound up being used as an all-purpose page to post news and announcements,
as well as instructions or
comments, from the Commodore. This was simply out of convenience - the
Commodore was also the one keeping the website updated.
This year, we have added a separate News
page for news and member announcements. The Commodore's Log
can now be used as originally intended - as a "blog", for the Commodore to
share thoughts and ideas, and communicate or comment to the
Club, our friends, supporters and the world in general, or otherwise use
as he chooses.
