Event Wrap-up: After a year of parties in t-shirts, shorts and bathing suits, the elegant Commodore's Ball gave us a chance to play "dress up". Incoming Commodore John Miller said he was amazed: "You all clean up so well". Apparently so, as many had difficulty recognizing people they'd seen all season, now shaved or with make-up, and wearing formal attire.

This year, our Polynesian Island/Tiki Lounge theme was inspired by the recently re-opened Dallas Trader Vic's. Decor included bamboo and fishnets, carved masks and tiki totems, grass skirting and shells . As guests arrived, they chose a tiki mug to use for the evening, then take home as a souvenir.
Assorted Tiki Mugs
The evening began with a cocktail hour - hors d'œuvres of cheese, fruit and mini eggrolls, and drinks from the open bar, including a selection of classic tiki cocktails. Then it was on to dinner.
The menu included the always excellent prime rib, along with the new spicy coconut curry chicken skewers. Additionally, we had salad with Asian toasted sesame or pineapple mango vinaigrette dressing, garlic mashed potatoes and green beans. For dessert, cheese cake and carrot cake, with coffee.

As dinner was winding up, we were treated to an entertaining (and educational, even) Polynesian dance performance. Marvic and Fusi demonstrated Redman is an attentive hula studentancient and more recent Hawaiian hula, including one about the Hawaiian paniolos (cowboys) on the Big Island ("Yee Haw!"). At the end, the women were invited to join the dancers and learn some Hawaiian hula and Tahitian dance moves. Next, the men came up and practiced a fearsome Maori war chant. Then they divided into two tribes (one included all the past commodores in attendance) to see which one was the most ferocious and intimidating. The old commodores' tribe won, hands down.
Finally, we were treated to a hilarious hula dance-off, between the usually shy Larry Nelson and Chris "Redman" Redmond. Somewhere in the midst of all this, the startling 'Crazy Grass Skirt Hula Streaker' struck. I hope someone got a picture of that!

After the entertainment, the Commodore presented awards to his fellow officers, for their hard work and dedication, in bringing the Club successfully through a year that began with the Club nearly being dissolved. (Thanks, again, gals. We did it!)
Next, the award for 'New Members of the Year' was presented to Richard and Kathy Dalby, our new Treasurer and Secretary.
The 'Member of the Year' award was presented to Deborah Brantley, for her encouragement and support, and her hard work for the Club, all year.
Finally, 'Lifetime Membership' was awarded to Chris and Linda Redmond, and to Ron Haskins, for their many years of commitment and service to the Club, and to the 'Thunder for the Children' charity events, benefitting the Shriners Hospitals for Children. We honor and thank them for the contribution of their ideas, sweat, leadership, and even personal resources, toward the success of our organization and its social and charitable goals.
Next, the newly-elected Commodore John Miller was introduced by outgoing Commodore Brian "Lizard" Dusek, and presented with his flag of office. He introduced the rest of the new officers and board, presented them their flags, and then spoke briefly of his plans and goals for the coming year.

After the awards, guests hit the dance floor, as DJ Marshall Argovitz began spinning a stack of virtual wax, and the bartenders mixed on. And, then... I'm sorry, I'm afraid my memory's rather hazy, after that.

As your 2007 Commodore, and on behalf of my fellow officers, I wish to thank all of you who came to our Ball, and celebrated our successful Bayview Boat Club year with us.
