Event Wrap-up:  The arriving guests braved a chilly and surprisingly strong wind, as they hurried to the door, trying to keep themselves and their finery somewhat intact. Most ladies made straight for the restroom mirrors, for a bit of hair repair. Most men made straight for the bar - their hair could wait.

During the cocktail hour, we nibbled cheese and fruit hors d'œuvres, and enjoyed the evening's first drinks from the open bar. Some caught up with old friends, while others longingly eyed the roulette, craps and blackjack tables, idle for now. The Las Vegas-inspired theme was completed by DJ Marshall Argovitz, with his background of songs and music from "Ratpack Era" entertainers and other Vegas legends.

Soon, it was time for dinner (and speeches). The prime rib has been a favorite, in past years, but this time it was an unusually, uh,... rare treat. We also had twice-baked potatoes, Italian green beans and Caesar salad, followed by Black Forest and cheese cake, with coffee.

Past Commodore Brian "Lizard" Dusek (bravely) closed the bar, and introduced Commodore John Miller. He recalled the year past - its joys and challenges - and recognized his fellow officers and board. Then he presented two special awards. Tom and Roxie Madison were named New Members of the Year, and Fonda Henson was honored as Member of the Year, both for their above-and-beyond-the-call service to the Board and the Club, this last year. (Fonda later delivered, impromptu, a touching and spirited tribute to John and Jeannie Miller, with a first-person account of their hard work and sacrifice, in giving us a fun and successful season of parties.)
Then Brian Dusek was re-introduced, to make additional presentations. Lifetime Membership was awarded to Gary and Marilyn Dobson, and to Gus and Denise Perrin, for their many years of service to the Club, and for their heart-felt commitment to the 'Thunder for the Children' charity events. We honor and thank them for setting such a positive example, as both servants and leaders, over years of contributions toward the success of our organization.
Next, the title of Chaplain Emeritus was conferred on Pat Lee. Pat is a charter member and - like Gary and Gus - Past Commodore. Pat and Lori have previously been honored with Lifetime Membership, for past years of service to the Club. After further serving us for five years, as Chaplain, it was fitting to recognize and honor Pat with this permanent title and status.
Commodore Miller then introduced the Commodore-elect, Chris Menard. He, in turn, introduced the new officers and board, and shared his excitement and enthusiasm for the coming season. Finally - to cheers and applause - he pronounced, "The bar is back open, and the gambling is on!"

Guests spent the rest of the evening drinking, counting cards, placing bets, rolling dice, drinking and dancing. And drinking. At one point, the new Commodore - a beer in each hand - led a conga line that absorbed nearly half of the attendees. Yes, it looks like we're in for another good year.
After three hours, the gaming tables closed, and folks exchanged their winnings for raffle tickets. In the final hour, between songs and dancing, tickets were drawn and five prizes given away. Alas, as it always does, midnight came too soon.

Thanks to everyone who came and celebrated the past year with Commodore and Mrs. John Miller. We had a great turn-out. Thanks to those who came early and helped set up and decorate. And special thanks to Kathy Dalby, who headed the planning committee, arranged for the casino games, and created our decorations.
