Benefiting the Texas Shriners Hospitals for Children
In past years, the highlight and biggest event of our year was the
annual ‘Thunder for the Children’ Poker Run, Sailing Regatta and Charity
Auction, in September. Over the years, this weekend-long charity event
raised $330,000 to benefit the disabled and injured children receiving
treatment and therapy at the
Shrine Children’s Hospitals in
Houston (orthopædic) and
Galveston (burns).
A tragic and well-publicized 2006 accident at a poker run
event on Lake Texoma, and the legal atmosphere that followed, led us, in 2007,
to suspend holding our event.
Other Charitable Activity
Although we are organized as a non-profit social club, not as
a charity, our members naturally tend to help, when situations and
opportunities arise. In recent years, we:
donated items to a Mesquite charity that
provides single mothers with emergency material assistance, and
training in occupational and life skills, within an environment of high
accountability.
threw an 'M' Dock fish fry lunch for the soldiers, fishermen and
other participants, in 'Take a Soldier Fishing' Day, and gave
soldiers boat rides from their hotel to our marina, or to various
restaurants, and back.
collected toys for the U.S. Marine's 'Toys for Tots' program.
collected toy and cash donations for the
WFAA 'Santas Helpers Toy Drive'.
collected items to help re-stock the food pantry at
Rockwall Helping Hands.
Provide the highest quality care to children with neuromusculoskeletal conditions, burn injuries and certain other special health care needs within a compassionate, family-centered and collaborative care environment.
Provide for the education of physicians and other health care professionals.
Conduct research to discover new knowledge that improves the quality of life of children and families.
This mission is carried out without cost to the patient or family and without regard to financial need or relationship to a Shriner.
